This is the first 3D printing course. The objective is to learn steps how to create a object using 3D printer from the beginning to the end. In this lecture, I’m going to make a small cuboid with a empty part of a cylinder inside.
1. Design in the 123D Design
a. Create a cube
Primitives-> Box (set length, width and height before clicking to settle down the box)
b. Create a cylinder and put it on the top of the cuboid
c. Extrude the cylinder through the cuboid
d. Delete the cylinder
Now I get a object as what’s shown in the following picture.
e. In the end , export as a STL file.
Export as 3D ->STL
2. Check if the model is closed and orientable in Netfabb
This is important. If the model isn’t closed or orientable, it can’t be printed out by 3D printer.
New analyse->Standard analyse->See in the right-bottom table if « Surface is closed » and « Surface is orientable » are both marked as « Yes »
So my model has no problem.
3. Set values for 3D printer in Cura
Choose the type of your 3D printer. In this case, it’s Ultimaker2 3D Printer. Import the STL file again, then set all the values in the left as those in the pictures.
Export as a gcode file.
All people’s models are saved in a SD card.
4. 3D Printing
a. Turn on the switch on the back.
b. Remove the materials left from last time.
c. Add new material
The material is a spool of filament.
After choosing « Ready », the filament goes faster.
d. Choose material(PLA)
e. Return to print
Find and choose your file first.
There’s an estimated time shown on the screen.
f. Start printing!!
In the first 15 minutes, we should stay here and check if it works well.
g. Get the final object!!
The 3D printer works well. I get my first 3D-printed object!!
