00-Présentation des fablabs

What it is

In my vision, fablab is a lab where people can create digital fabrications with technical machines, such as 3D printers and laser cutters, and share their works with others all over the world.

Origins

The fab lab program was initiated to broadly explore how the content of information relates to its physical representation and how an under-served community can be powered by technology at the grassroots level. The program began as a collaboration between the Grassroots Invention Group and the Center for Bits and Atoms at the Media Lab in the Massachusetts Institute of Technology with a grant from the National Science Foundation (Washington, D.C.) in 2001.
While the Grassroots Invention Group is no longer in the Media Lab, The Center for Bits and Atoms consortium is still actively involved in continuing research in areas related to description and fabrication but does not operate or maintain any of the labs worldwide (with the excmobile fab lab). The fab lab concept also grew out of a popular class at MIT (MAS.863) named « How To Make (Almost) Anything ». The class is still offered in the fall semesters.

Network

There’re 8 fablabs in China (but it’s strange that only 7 fablabs are shown on the map). Most are in Shanghai and Shenzhen.

What it is not

It’s not a very commercial place, where to sell materials or models and offer tools with a high price.

Rules

1. Our fablab should be open to public.
2. Any project made at our fablab must be documented, open-source, reproducible by someone else and available on-line.
3. Our fablab must participate in the larger, global Fab Lab network.

Accessibility

Open to public.

Machines and materials

Machines:
1. EPILOG LASER-CUTTER MINI 24″(40 watts)
2. KNK MAXX AIR VINYL-CUTTER
3. 3D PRINTER REPLICATOR 2
4. ROLAND MODELA MDX40A MILLING-MACHINE
5. DREMEL
6. PFAFF SEWING-EMBROIDERY MACHINE
7. 3D PRINTERS ULTIMAKER2 (x2)
Materials:
As I know, there’re some filaments for the 3D printers, wood sheets for the laser cutter and electronic boards. Honestly I’m not sure.

Documentation

Documentation is the file we create to record the machines, materials, every step and details we used for making the project.
Documentation helps us to understand more clearly what we did and it helps other people to reproduce our project.

02-Who are you students

Name

Ni CHEN

Where are you from

China

Your background

Now I’m a M1 student from Human Computer Interaction Design. My bachelor major is Digital Media Art.

What you like/what you don’t like

I like beautiful things and trying new stuffs. I prefer doing interesting and innovative projects, such as an interactive painting in the museum, to developing boring management system for the bank.

Why did you chose the digital fabrication course

I like handwork and interactive installations. Since I’ve spent most of my time studying on the computer and software in the past, I hope to learn some knowledges about hardware and fabricating.

03-What is digital fabrication ?

What is digital fabrication

Digital fabrication is a type of manufacturing process where the machine used is controlled by a computer. The most common forms of digital fabrication are: CNC Machining, 3D Printing and Laser Cutting.
There are a huge range of digital fabrication techniques. The important aspect that unifies them is that the machines can reliably be programmed to make consistent products from digital designs.

04-Final project

Final project

Because our project idea in Sarah’s class isn’t very clear yet, I have no clue what I need to make in this class for it (We’ll decide within this week andI’ll update.). From my personal perspective, I’d like to make a 3D printed necklace or earring.

05-Documentation

What is documentation

Documentation is the file we create to record the machines, materials, every step and details we used for making the project. Documentation helps us to understand more clearly what we did and it helps other people to reproduce our project.

Documentation examples

Good example: Froebel open gift
There’re detailed pictures and texts. It documents well what it is, how to make it and shares the design files. It could be better if there’s a video as well to explain how to assemble the box.
The whole process isn’t expressed explicitly because there’re too few pictures and texts.
