00-Présentation des fablabs

  • What it is
    I envision the fablab as a vivid open community where anyone could learn and teach fabrication skills from/to each other
  • Origins
    The program started in MIT in 2001 with a grant from the National Science Foundation.
  • Network
    Here are all the fab labs in Paris:

  • What it is not
    A fap lab.
    Or: a place to be lazy and just hang out during the day.

  • Rules
    1. Free public access
    2. Share all knowledge on tools, designs and processes by documentation
    3. Participation in the larger global Fab Lab network & Support for the Fab Lab charter
  • Accessibility
    The fab lab
    has free public access and is thus open to everyone at least part of each week.
  • Machines and materials
    This fab lab has a laser-cutter, milling machine, 2 3D printers, another Makerbot 3D printer, a sewing machine, a vinyl cutter and Arduini.
    As I understood the materials include some MDF wood sheets and filaments for the 3D printers.
  • Documentation
    Documentation is sharing the knowledge and files from your entire fabrication process. It is very important since you could give back to the community in this way and help someone after you, or someone in an entirely different place.

    Computer Science, now Human Computer Interaction and Design
  • What you like/what you don’t like…
    I like information visualizations, user-centred design and dreaming about new innovative ideas. I don’t like choosing for existing engineering solutions, or for « current standard » solutions such as apps.
  • Why did you chose the digital fabrication course ?
    I want to learn about tangibles, electronics and using fabrication machines. I really see this as a unique opportunity that would not have been possible some years ago.

  • What it digital fabrication
    Digital fabrication allows us to produce material digitally using 3D modelling software. 

04-final project 

  • Final Project
    I have two ideas in mind:
    1. Squishy phone case with pressure sensors on the back
    Could be used for bi-manual interaction with the phone, e.g. setting the focus/context in some apps.
    2. Smart dices that know on which side they are + their orientation to other dices
    Could be big and squishy targeted to kids.

05-Documentation

  • What is documentation ?
    Documentation is sharing the knowledge and files from your entire fabrication process. In my opinion this includes all the resources you checked, used and also any modifications you made with respect to them. Everything that surprised you or any challenge that you encountered should also be there, including photos and videos.
  • Documentation examples
    The development page of Labyrinth shows a good way of documentation: for every step of the process all resources and findings are included with some photos and videos.

    This project called Proximity 360 (listed on the FabLabsIO website) is a bad example since there is no link whatsoever, not to any repository and neither to any documentation page. Also, the description is in Spanish which excludes people who don’t know that language.
